Equipment
Most equipment found on Miller Farm
is commonly found on any farm but, none is more important than our
tractor, chain saws and log splitter. Most of the property is
timber; we spend many hours in the spring and fall clearing fallen
branches and trees.
Oliver 1255 Tractor
We purchased this well used 1970 Oliver 1255 in April 2008.
While it was complete, it was hard to shift and impossible to get
into reverse. The PO said it was just a worn out shifter.
Unfortunately, we listened to him; and of course the transmission
was in worse condition than we could ever know.
So, first we replaced the shifter assembly, thinking that would fix
the problem, but after lifting the transmission cover and seeing
milky colored oil, I knew at the very least I had water in the
transmission and minor (light) rusting on the shift fork shafts.
Thinking that was why the transmission wouldn’t go into reverse, I
then cleaned the rust off the shafts, changed the transmission /
hydraulic system oil and hoped for the best. I would need lots of
hope since peering in the case with the removed shift cover and
drained of oil, I now viewed a reverse primary and secondary gear
that were completely chewed away. Did I say it was getting worse?
So, at the very least I had a good running engine, loader &
hydraulics and a bum transmission. Off to split the cases and find
out what was really wrong. Stay tuned for more....
